八月九日是新加坡的国庆日。
bā yuè jiǔ rì shì xīn jiā pō de guó qìng rì
The ninth of August is Singapore's National Day.
那天傍晚，妈妈和爷爷带我到海边看国庆庆典。
nà tiān bàng wǎn mā ma hé yé ye dài wǒ dào hǎi biān kàn guó qìng qìng diǎn
That evening, Mum and Grandpa took me to the waterfront to watch the National Day celebrations.
我们都穿上了红色和白色的衣服，我手里还拿着一面小国旗。
wǒ men dōu chuān shàng le hóng sè hé bái sè de yī fu wǒ shǒu li hái ná zhe yí miàn xiǎo guó qí
We all wore red and white, and I held a little flag.
海边人山人海，大家都在等着庆典开始。

The waterfront was packed with people, all waiting for the celebrations to begin.
天黑以后，五彩缤纷的烟花在天空中绽放，照亮了整个海湾。

After dark, colourful fireworks burst in the sky and lit up the whole bay.

Everyone sang the national anthem together, loud and in time.

Grandpa told me Singapore used to be poor, and it was everyone working together that made it what it is today.
