全文 The whole story, with pinyin and English
xīn nián kuài dào le nǎi nai dài wǒ qù Niú chē shuǐ mǎi nián huò
Chinese New Year was coming, so Grandma took me to Chinatown to buy New Year goods.
jiē dào liǎng páng guà mǎn le hóng dēng long rè nao de rén qún jǐ de shuǐ xiè bù tōng
Red lanterns hung all along both sides of the street, and the bustling crowds were packed so tight that not even water could get through.
xiǎo tān shàng bǎi zhe gè zhǒng gè yàng de nián huò yǒu ròu gān nián gāo hái yǒu jīn càn càn de jú zi
The stalls were piled with all kinds of New Year goods: bak kwa, nian gao and shiny golden mandarin oranges.
nǎi nai mǎi le liǎng dà dài xiào zhe shuō chī le jú zi xīn de yì nián dà jí dà lì
Grandma bought two big bags and said with a smile, “Eat mandarin oranges and the new year will bring you lots of luck!”
wǒ men zǒu jìn yí zuò gǔ lǎo de sì miào lǐ miàn qīng yān niǎo niǎo hěn duō rén zài ān jìng de qí fú
We walked into an old temple. Incense smoke curled upwards inside, and many people were quietly praying for blessings.
nǎi nai gào su wǒ tā xiǎo shí hou jiā jiù zhù zài zhè tiáo jiē shàng nà shí hou hái méi yǒu zhè me duō gāo lóu
Grandma told me that when she was little, her family lived on this very street, and back then there weren't so many tall buildings.
nà shí hou rén men yòng niú chē yùn shuǐ suǒ yǐ zhè lǐ cái jiào Niú chē shuǐ
Back then, people used bullock carts to carry water, and that's why this place is called “Niu Che Shui” (bullock-cart water).
tīng le nǎi nai de gù shi wǒ jué de Niú chē shuǐ bù zhǐ shì mǎi nián huò de dì fang gèng shì wǒ men de gēn
After hearing Grandma's story, I felt that Chinatown wasn't just a place to buy New Year goods — it was where our roots are.
