有一天，马妈妈对小马说：“你把这袋麦子送到河对面去，好吗？”
yǒu yì tiān mǎ mā ma duì xiǎo mǎ shuō nǐ bǎ zhè dài mài zi sòng dào hé duì miàn qù hǎo ma
One day, Mother Horse said to the little horse, “Will you take this sack of wheat across to the other side of the river?”
小马背起麦子，高高兴兴地出发了。
xiǎo mǎ bēi qǐ mài zi gāo gāo xìng xìng de chū fā le
The little horse put the wheat on his back and set off happily.
来到河边，小马不知道河水有多深。
lái dào hé biān xiǎo mǎ bù zhī dào hé shuǐ yǒu duō shēn
When he reached the riverbank, the little horse didn't know how deep the water was.
老牛说：“水很浅，才到我的小腿，你能过去。”
lǎo niú shuō shuǐ hěn qiǎn cái dào wǒ de xiǎo tuǐ nǐ néng guò qù
The old ox said, “The water is shallow. It only comes up to my lower legs. You can get across.”
小马正要过河，松鼠却大叫：“别过河！水很深，会把你冲走的！”
xiǎo mǎ zhèng yào guò hé sōng shǔ què dà jiào bié guò hé shuǐ hěn shēn huì bǎ nǐ chōng zǒu de
Just as the little horse was about to cross, a squirrel shouted, “Don't cross! The water is very deep. It will sweep you away!”
小马不知道该听谁的，只好跑回家问妈妈。
xiǎo mǎ bù zhī dào gāi tīng shéi de zhǐ hǎo pǎo huí jiā wèn mā ma
The little horse didn't know whom to listen to, so he ran home to ask his mother.
妈妈说：“水深不深，你要自己试一试才知道。”
mā ma shuō shuǐ shēn bu shēn nǐ yào zì jǐ shì yi shì cái zhī dào
His mother said, “Whether the water is deep or not, you have to try it yourself to find out.”
小马小心地走进河里，原来河水不像老牛说的那样浅，也不像松鼠说的那样深。
xiǎo mǎ xiǎo xīn de zǒu jìn hé lǐ yuán lái hé shuǐ bú xiàng lǎo niú shuō de nà yàng qiǎn yě bú xiàng sōng shǔ shuō de nà yàng shēn
The little horse walked carefully into the river. The water was not as shallow as the ox had said, and not as deep as the squirrel had said.
