Our school was holding a science fair, and my good friend Xiaojie and I decided to make a “volcano” that could erupt.
wǒ men yòng nián tǔ niē chū huǒ shān de yàng zi zài zài shān kǒu fàng jìn yí gè xiǎo píng zi zhuāng shàng xiǎo sū dá
We shaped the volcano out of clay, then put a small bottle in the opening at the top and filled it with baking soda.
dì yī cì shì yàn de shí hou wǒ men dào jìn cù kě shì huǒ shān zhǐ mào chū jǐ gè xiǎo pào pao yì diǎn yě bú zhuàng guān
The first time we tried, we poured in vinegar, but the volcano only gave off a few little bubbles. It wasn't impressive at all.
Xiǎo Jié zhòu zhe méi tóu shuō shì bu shì nǎ lǐ chū le wèn tí wǒ men jué dìng chá yi chá zī liào
Xiaojie frowned and said, “Did something go wrong somewhere?” We decided to look it up.
yuán lái cù fàng de tài shǎo le xiǎo sū dá yě bú gòu duō suǒ yǐ pào pao chōng bu shàng lái
It turned out we had used too little vinegar and not enough baking soda, so the bubbles couldn't shoot up.
wǒ men gǎi yòng dà bēi zi zhuāng cù yòu jiā le liǎng dà sháo xiǎo sū dá zài shì yí cì
We switched to a big cup of vinegar, added two big spoonfuls of baking soda, and tried again.
kē xué zhǎn nà tiān hóng hóng de yán jiāng yí xià zi cóng huǒ shān kǒu pēn le chū lái dà jiā dōu jīng jiào qǐ lái
On the day of the science fair, bright red “lava” suddenly burst out of the volcano, and everyone cried out in surprise.

Our teacher praised us, and we learned something: don't lose heart when you fail. Find out why, try again, and you will succeed.
