全文 The whole story, with pinyin and English

xīng qī tiān xià wǔ nǎi nai chū mén mǎi cài wǒ yí gè rén zài kè tīng lǐ pāi qiú

On Sunday afternoon, Grandma went out to buy groceries, and I was bouncing a ball in the living room on my own.

nǎi nai chū mén qián dīng zhǔ guo wǒ bú yào zài wū lǐ wán qiú kě shì wǒ méi yǒu tīng

Before she left, Grandma had told me, “Don't play ball in the house.” But I didn't listen.

Suddenly the ball bounced onto the cabinet. Crash! Grandma's beloved vase fell and smashed to pieces.

wǒ xià de bù zhī suǒ cuò xīn pēng pēng zhí tiào

I was so scared I didn't know what to do, and my heart was pounding.

wǒ xiǎng bǎ suì piàn cáng qǐ lái rán hòu shuō shì xiǎo māo dǎ pò de

I thought about hiding the pieces and then saying the kitten had broken it.

kě shì kàn zhe xiǎo māo wú gū de yǎn jing wǒ jué de zhè yàng zuò tài bù chéng shí le

But looking at the kitten's innocent eyes, I felt that doing that would be far too dishonest.

nǎi nai huí lái yǐ hòu wǒ dī zhe tóu bǎ shì qing de jīng guò lǎo lǎo shí shí de gào su le tā

When Grandma came back, I hung my head and told her exactly what had happened, honestly.

nǎi nai bú dàn méi yǒu mà wǒ hái mō mo wǒ de tóu shuō zhī cuò néng gǎi jiù shì hǎo hái zi

Grandma didn't scold me at all. She stroked my head and said, “If you know you were wrong and put it right, you're a good child.”
