Capy’s Bakery – Bake, Decorate and Serve

Bake a cake with Capy the capybara: choose a cake, a flavour and the icing, tap toppings onto it and write a name on top. Then open the shop and serve the customers, with counting, money, fractions and recipe maths in every order.

A bakery is full of real maths: counting cherries, cutting a cake into equal slices, weighing flour, giving the right change and making a recipe bigger for a party. In the bakery below your child decorates their own cakes and then serves customers whose orders practise exactly those skills, from K2 counting to P6 ratio and percentage.

Why a Bakery Is Good Learning

Children love baking, and a bakery is one of the friendliest places to meet maths that matters. Every cake is a small project with choices and reasons: which cake, which flavour, how many toppings, how to share it fairly. When a customer asks for something particular, the child has to read the order carefully, plan, build it and check it, which is exactly the habit we want in a maths lesson. Capy’s Bakery keeps the play open, so there is always room for a purple donut with eight candles, and adds customer orders for children who like a goal.

Everything is a cartoon drawn on the page. There is no camera, no uploading and no chat, so younger children can play safely on their own.

Bake and Decorate Your Own Cake

In the Cake tab, choose a round layer cake, a cupcake, a cookie, a donut, a fruit pie or a local favourite: an egg tart, a pandan chiffon cake or a kueh lapis with its stripy layers. Pick the flavour, which colours the sponge or the dough, from vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, pandan, ube, red velvet and lemon, then the icing colour and a plate. Cookies come in five shapes: circle, square, triangle, heart and star. Type a short name or message, up to ten letters, and Capy pipes it onto the cake.

In the Toppings tab, choose sprinkles, cherries, strawberries, blueberries, kiwi or orange slices, chocolate chips, sugar stars or candles, then tap the top of the cake exactly where you want each one. Undo takes the last topping off and the take-off tool removes any single topping you tap. Press Bake it! and the oven comes down over the counter, the cake rises, the timer counts down and a ding tells you it is ready.

Serving Customers: Orders by Level

Open the Orders tab, choose a level and press Open the shop. A queue of customers arrives, each with an order ticket. Build the order or work out the answer, then press Check order. The bakery says which parts are right and which still need fixing, with a reason for each, so a child can fix one thing at a time instead of starting again. If an answer is still wrong after two tries, the working is shown.

K2Counting and colours: “A cupcake with pink icing and 3 cherries.” Shapes: “A star cookie with yellow icing and 2 chocolate chips.” Two kinds of toppings to count separately. Birthday orders ask for one candle for each year.
P1 to P2Adding toppings (“5 strawberries and 3 cherries: how many toppings altogether?”), taking away (a customer eats some cherries: take them off and count what is left), repeating patterns round the edge of the cake (AB, AAB, ABB and ABC), and giving change in Singapore coins and notes from $1, $2, $5 or $10.
P3 to P4Cutting a cake into halves, thirds, quarters, sixths or eighths and covering a fraction of it with chocolate; equivalent fractions (a half of a cake cut into eighths is four eighths); multiplication and division with trays and boxes; and weighing grams on a kitchen scale or pouring millilitres into a measuring jug.
P5 to P6Fractions of an amount (3/5 of 40 cookies), ratio (flour and sugar in the ratio 2 : 1, weighed on the scale), percentage discounts, decimals in money with change from $10 or $50, and scaling a recipe for more guests.

Every order is made by the page from the numbers up, so the maths always works: the slices divide the cake evenly, the fractions of amounts are whole numbers, the discounted prices are in whole cents that Singapore coins can pay, and the change is never negative.

Fractions You Can Slice

Fractions make the most sense when children can see and cut them. On a round cake, a fruit pie, a pandan chiffon or a kueh lapis, the Cut into equal slices buttons divide the cake into 2, 3, 4, 6 or 8 equal parts. Then the chocolate tool covers one slice with each tap. An order such as “cut the cake into 4 equal slices and put chocolate on 3/4 of it” links the words, the numbers and the picture: the bottom number tells you how many equal slices, the top number how many are covered. Equivalent fraction orders ask a child to cut the cake into eighths and cover a half, then say how many eighths that is, which is the moment many children first see that 1/2 and 4/8 are the same amount of cake.

Money and Change, the Singapore Way

The till has Singapore coins of 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents and $1, and notes of $2, $5 and $10. A customer buys one or two items, such as a cupcake for $1.50 and a cookie for 60 cents, and pays with a note. Your child taps coins and notes into the tray to give the change. There is no running total, because counting the change is the point; Check then says whether it is too little or too much. A good habit to teach: the price and the change together make what the customer paid. At P5 and P6 the prices have decimals and the customer may buy three or four of the same item, so multiplication of money comes in too.

Measuring, Ratio and Recipes

Baking is measuring. The P3 and P4 orders ask for, say, 350 g of flour on the kitchen scale or 250 ml of milk in the jug. The buttons add 100, 50 or 10 at a time, and the child must read the dial or the jug to know when to stop, just as in the measurement topic in school. At P5 and P6 the scale is used for ratio: if flour and sugar are mixed in the ratio 3 : 2 and there is 200 g of sugar, how much flour goes in? Recipe scaling questions ask how much butter is needed when a recipe for 8 cupcakes is made for 20, which is proportional reasoning with friendly numbers.

Print a Bakery Worksheet

Press Worksheet to print ten bakery maths questions for the level chosen in the Orders tab, with pictures of cakes for counting, fractions and patterns, and an answer page at the end. Each press makes a new set. The Colouring sheet prints the cake on the counter as an outline, toppings and all, for colouring in or for planning a new design on paper. Save picture saves the decorated cake as a picture on your device, ready to show a grandparent or put in a class slideshow.
