What is 听力理解 listening comprehension?

Listening comprehension is part of every Chinese paper in Singapore primary schools, from the first school-based tests in Primary 1 to the PSLE. Pupils hear short recordings, such as a conversation between classmates, an announcement in the school hall, a voice message from a parent or a short talk, and answer one multiple-choice question about each. In the lower levels the questions and answers often use pictures, and the question is read aloud. In the upper levels the passages are longer, there are four options, and many questions ask pupils to work something out rather than repeat a word they heard: why someone did something, what will happen next, or what the main message is.

Most children find listening hard for one simple reason: they do not hear enough Chinese spoken at a natural pace outside lessons. Short, regular practice with real-sounding recordings helps far more than a long session just before the exam.

How these practice sets work

Every set has five questions with recorded voices: different voices for children, parents, teachers and aunties, and a calm examiner voice that reads the question for K2 to Primary 3. In 📝 Exam mode each recording can be played twice, like the real exam. Your child chooses an answer for every question, then presses Check my answers to see the score, which answers were right, and the full script of what was said. In 🎧 Practice mode there is no limit: replay any recording, switch to 🐢 slow speech, open the script while listening, and see straight away whether an answer is right.

Tap any word in the script to hear it on its own and see its pinyin and meaning. The 拼音 and English buttons show or hide pinyin and translations everywhere on the page. Each set also prints as an A4 question paper with an answer key and a script, so a parent or tutor can read the recordings aloud away from the screen.
